cinematic trailer, this is sooo fucking awesome best game ever!!!

Far Cry 2 opens on your deathbed, malaria nearly draining the life from your body. To make matters worse, an arms dealer known as the Jackal has taken the time to express his disgust for you, leaning over your hospital bed to reiterate your pathetic state. It's at this moment your health turns for the better, fueled to recovery by an obsession with killing the Jackal not just because of his hard words but also his deplorable role in a civil war. The nefarious munitions supplier has been trading arms with two African dictators, which in turn perpetuates a war ravaging the citizens of the game's fictional nation. As one of a dozen playable mercenaries, your goal is to assassinate the Jackal and put a stop to the violence.

How you do this is entirely up to you. Unlike the linear, scripted sequences that characterized the first game, Far Cry 2 promises completely non-linear, open-ended gameplay. You can make allies, destroy enemies, and even play sides against each other for your own benefit. Creative Director Clint Hocking explains that both sides of the war possess a leadership hierarchy that will automatically adjust when you've killed one of its members. As such, assassinating a key leader leads to a subordinate being promoted and their followers rising in the chain of command. It's a fully dynamic world in the sense that characters behave realistically and respond to your actions beyond just shooting back.

Hocking started the nearly 40-minute demonstration of the game in a lush oasis, working his way to a vista overlooking a heavily-guarded fuel depot. Destroying the depot was the only way of ensuring that neither faction engaged in the war would use it to their advantage. Before blasting the camp to bits, Hocking used a sniper rifle to hone in on an unsuspecting patrolman. Instead of killing him, Hocking shot his leg to bring the militiaman down. This set the sophisticated cooperative intelligence in gear, triggering the enemy's buddy to rush in and save him. Two quick shots brought both of them down, lessening the number of enemies to deal with as Hocking made his way into the depot.

Once he had entered the depot grounds, Hocking used a rocket-propelled grenade launcher to take out a few key structures. A few seconds later and the entire operation was a success, bits and pieces of what remained of the fuel depot flying through the air. Not all of the guards had been taken out, however, and jumping into a jeep allowed a quick escape. Keen to track him down, the remaining enemies buckled into a jeep of their own and pursued aggressively. Dispatching the persistent fellows required getting out at shanty town and engaging them in a fierce firefight. Killing them all proved rather difficult because of their highly intelligent behavior patterns that had them wisely taking cover and even trying to flank Hocking.

Approximately 30 weapons are planned for the final game, although only half are included in the current build. We took stock of an unnamed American semi-automatic rifle, RPG-7, standard AK-47, and flamethrower. Each weapon possesses characteristics comparable to its real-world counterpart; for instance, the previously mentioned AK-47 has a high reliability factor because of its durability even though it isn't very accurate. The American rifle is appropriately unreliable, despite possessing enormous power; in fact, Hocking illustrated how easy it is to jam the gun, although it's easily remedied with a tap of the fire key. Along with firearms, expect melee weapons such as the machete that Hocking used to slash his way through the previously mentioned oasis.

With approximately 50 square kilometers of navigable game space, it's entirely possible to finish the game without seeing the entire world. Much of the game is set on the African savanna, yellowed with dried grasses and dehydrated trees. Other types of terrain will be peppered throughout the game, such as the dense jungle oasis that Hocking used as a starting point for the demonstration. Finding your way across the expanse of Far Cry 2 is possible thanks to a paper map and compass that can be pulled up at any time.

It's interesting to note that Far Cry 2 promises a sophisticated weather system that dynamically generates different conditions and realistically affects the environment. Wind, for example, blows in a particular direction that influences where clouds drift in the sky and mats down grasses on the savanna. A more dramatic example are lightning storms that have the potential to set trees ablaze; moreover, fire can spread to neighboring grasses if the wind is blowing just right.

It should go without saying that Far Cry 2 is astoundingly gorgeous even in this early pre-alpha state. Factor in the realistic physics and advance rendering systems used for fire and weapons, and the game is truly amazing to behold. Running it could be problematic for low-end users, though, as Hocking stated that at minimum you'll need a blazing-fast single core processor and at least a middle-of-the-road to high-end graphics card. Obviously, Support for DirectX 10 is planned for those with rigs configured with Windows Vista.

Ubisoft is targeting a March release for the game, which isn't that far off, even if that target is a bit ambitious. Reconfigure your holiday wish lists kids because you're going to want to upgrade you computer for Far Cry 2. The game simply shows enormous potential and we can't wait to get another look as it continues its development
